Buy a dog….Ive been through some pretty life changing experiences in the last 24 months. The most valuable lesson one people have been trying to tell me for years. LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF.
I was brought up in a family where helping others was the right thing to do. But people that got closed tome knew I took it too far. “you have a broken bird complex” she said. You always wanted to fix the dying animals on the farm no matter how large or small. “I´ve watched you do the same with the people in your life” she warned. “if you put half as much effort into yourself as you do the people in your life… imagine how far you would go!” she encouraged. I never really understood the importance of her advice until last year. I always felt like I did both or that if I put my everything into others they would do the same for me. I honestly believed everyone was like me. We all did everything to help the ones we loved. I believed in the core values of my upbringing treat others the way you want to be treated. Unfortunately I thought this meant treat others in the way you want to be treated and they will do the same. But that was foolish and naive. Most of us are self serving, very few are selfless. The selfless people often attract the self serving because they are eager to please and easy to take advantage of. I know from personal experience that things have happened to me in my life completely out of my control. My life is a disaster and even though I desperately try hard to fix it sometimes I dont have the tools. But after my last relationship ended I realised the true value of my life. I felt like I had done everything in my power to fix myself. To focus on myself and put everything into getting better and giving myself the best chance in life. Alas I was wrong.
I sat there distraught. Another relationship ended, another go at life falling to pieces. I had nothing. I asked why? Because I had put all of my eggs in one basket. I looked back on the previous year or so and realised how much time I spent thinking about others. How much energy I wasted trying to help others. To fix them, to help them in the way I had been taught to do, in the way I thought was right.
